Simon Peter begins in the world of Galilean fishing, where work is physical and identity is tied to family, labor and place. The Gospels place him by the lake with Andrew before Jesus calls him. From there, Peter becomes one of the most visible followers in Jesus’ circle. He sees miracles, asks bold questions, confesses Jesus as the Messiah, and still misunderstands what kind of Messiah Jesus is. He tries to protect Jesus too quickly and promises a loyalty he cannot yet carry.
